Tableau: Create Dynamic Reference Lines Using Parameters

In this beginner level Tableau tutorial, we will be learning how to allow the end user to have control over where to position a reference line on a visualization.

Tableau parameters are dynamic values that can be changed by the user. Tableau parameters are incredibly powerful and have a variety of use cases.

One interesting example of implementing parameters in tableau is using parameters to allow the user to interactively position of reference lines.

For this guide, we will be using the “Sample - Superstore” dataset that comes with every Tableau installation. We will create a chart visualizing Sales by Year, and then add a parameter that allows the user to adjust the value of the Sales Target reference line to see how Sales are faring relative to the specified target value.

Step 1- Create the visualization:

Follow the below steps to replicate the view:

1- Drag Order Date to the Columns shelf.

2- Drag Sales to the Rows shelf.

3- Change the Marks type to Bar.
